Grain and Graze II is a $12 million, national, four year program (2010 - 2013) to increase water use efficiency in mixed crop/livestock systems across seven regions.
Grain & Graze II aims to:
Improve whole-farm profitability, sustainability and groundcover by accelerating the adoption of key management practices and technologies.
Enhance the resilience of mixed farming businesses because farmers are better equipped to make complex decisions in relation to changing climatic, market and natural resource management challenges.
MSF is involved with the project in two regions:- Northern Victoria and East South Australia.
Chris McDonough talks about No till Pasture Grass Control & Rhizoctonia and Findings, Learnings and Nutrition in these Grain & Graze II YouTube Clips.
Northern Victoria
Northern Victoria Grain & Graze II includes the Victorian Mallee, Wimmera, North Central, Goulburn Broken and North East Catchment Management Authority regions. The program in Northern Victoria is supported by BCG, through $1.9 million funding from GRDC and the Australian Government’s Caring for our Country.
The two themes being led by MSF are
Perennials on constrained soils - To characterise production potential of perennial plantings on constrained soil types in northern Victoria &
Grazing Solutions for large Mallee paddocks -To identify and promote practical solutions that farmers are currently using to exclude livestock from grazing sensitive soil types in large Mallee paddocks.
Further details on the Northern Victoria part of the project is at the BCG website more...
East South Australia
In East South Australia the Grain & Graze II project is supported by the Ag Excellence Alliance Inc. with the two themes in the SA Mallee being
Growing Biomass - Evaluation of options to increase biomass in the South Australian Mallee
Transition towards minimal Tillage practices - Improving No Till crop performance when transitioning from pasture to crop in Mallee environments
This project is supported by funding from Grains Research & Development Corporation (GRDC) and the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) under Grain & Graze and Caring for Our country funds
