Fact Sheet #27 – August 2007
Roy Latta, Department of Primary Industries, Walpeup, Vic.
The best opportunity to address salinity is to alter farming strategies to minimise recharge and reduce flow to saline groundwater. Herbaceous perennials are particularly attractive as a means to reduce recharge. They provide a high water use farming system that fits into existing industry settings as part of either cropping or grazing enterprises.
The perennial system should be at least as productive as an annual based system.
