Grain & Graze
Introduction
The Grain and Graze Mallee program ran between 2004 and 2008 and focused on the mixed farming regions of NSW, Victoria and South Australia. This project was run in collaboration with DPI Vic, DPI NSW, CSIRO Land and Water, PIRSA Rural Solutions SA, LMD CMA, MCMA and SA MDB NRM.
A first for Australian agriculture, Grain and Graze was a joint initiative of the Grains Research and Development Corporation, Meat and Livestock Australia, Australian Wool Innovation and Land and Water Australia. The project aimed to help mixed farmers across southern Australia increase the profitability of producing crops, pastures and livestock while better managing water, soil and biodiversity.

Key Objectives
- To lift mixed farm productivity in the Mallee by 10% by assessing and extending the role of annual and perennial pastures to increase pasture productivity, livestock profitability and subsequent crop yields.
- To decrease water recharge and salinity, and increase biodiversity, by incorporating pastures into mixed farming systems, contributing to the achievement of catchment targets levels.
- To engage, through communication, extension and participation activities, at least 500 producers in the Mallee region’s Grain and Graze activities between 2004-2008, with a view to change on farm/adoption of recommended Grain and Graze practices on at least 225 farm businesses.
